MG has officially taken the wraps off the GTS crossover, which is scheduled to go on sale next year in China.
The production GTS is basically an evolution of the CS Concept – presented last year at the Shanghai Motor Show, and as far as first impressions go, it’s not a bad looking car at all.
The GTS will be available with a four-cylinder 2.0 liter turbo engine, producing 217 HP (162 kW) and 258 lb-ft (349 Nm) of torque. Power will head to all four wheels via an all-wheel drive on-demand system with the help of a six-speed dual clutch transmission. With this engine, the MG GTS will be able to reach 62 mph in 8 seconds flat. Which is quite respectable.
The GTS will eventually get MG’s newly developed GDI diesel engines too, starting with a turbocharged 1.8 liter unit with 148 HP and 258 lb-ft of torque. This model will go on sale in selected markets, including the UK. Also expected will be a more affordable 1.5 liter petrol engine producing 168 HP and 184 lb-ft of torque.
The MG GTS will sit at 4500mm in length, 1855mm in width and 1675mm in height, which makes it 73mm longer, 8mm lower and 46mm wider than a VW Tiguan. Will it be successful enough in Europe? That remains to be seen as the compact crossover segment is a very diverse one at the moment.
