Set to arrive on the market in 2017 (refreshed current model on its way), the all-new BMW 6-Series will undergo a formula rethink. It’s going to lose some of its grand tourer cruising capability in exchange for a sharper drive.
BMW will reportedly partly achieve this by making it lighter (by some 200 kg / 440 lbs), using a new modular platform called CLAR, short for “cluster architecture.” It features some carbon parts, plus more extensive use of high strength steel and lighter alloys than before.
Power will come from the next advancement of the brand’s turbocharged straight-six and V8 engines and the three current body styles will be maintained. Four-wheel drive will obviously stay too, but a hybrid model is not planned at launch.
Car says the coupe and drop-top will be “more agile and inspiring,” with extra emphasis on sportiness and drive enjoy, while the four-door Gran Coupe will be more similar in its approach to the current model.
The source also mentions an active aero kit which would be an option on all models but the M6, where it would be offered as standard.
