We already know that Porsche won’t be making a sub-Boxster/Cayman model and use the 718 name for that, so its use for the next incarnation of the sub-911 model does make sense.

Besides, having numbers instead of actual names is definitely the way to go for Porsche.

The source, Automobile Magazine, doesn’t specify where it got its information from, but it clearly states that the next Boxster/Cayman models will be called 718, with obvious variations on the formula – there will be S, RS, GT models etc, and there will be a much wider array of available engines too.

These will apparently range from a 2.0-liter four-pot with an estimated 285 hp, a slightly bigger 2.5-liter variant of the same unit, as well as developments of the current six-pot units used – the 2.7-liter may be dropped, though.

We’re told to expect the 718’s debut sometime in 2016, when it’s believed to go on sale.
