One Hong Kong dollar is equal to around 0,13 of a dollar US, but that still means the HK$15 million spilled by a money transport onto a highway works out to around US$1,93 million!
Only HK$4.8 million or about US$620,000 was recovered (just under one third), with the rest most likely falling into the hands of the 20 to 30 people who found themselves at the scene of the… unfortunate incident.
The van was transporting a total of HK$525 million in separate HK$17.5 million boxes. Apparently, one of the vehicle’s doors suffered a fault and opened throwing one of said boxes onto a busy highway.
The three-man crew aboard the van did not stop, though, continuing on their way and only reporting what had happened when they arrived at their destination.
Of the money recovered, HK$1 million was brought in by two people, while an additional HK$2 million was handed over by another person. Nobody has yet been arrested, but police are going to conduct an investigation and will try to recover as much of the lost cash as possible.
