While the new MINI’s darty character, notably amplified by putting it in sport mode, is a bit much on the road, take it to the track and it really comes alive. The back lets go easily and progressively, and this happens regardless of whether you’re driving the regular three-door or the new five-door hatch.

This was the conclusion drawn by EVO which tested the car on both road and track. The verdict is a very positive one – the MINI’s trademark handling is not affected by the extra wheelbase and weight, and all the handling poise you’ve come to expect from one is still there.

The artificial-feeling electric power steering is the weakest link, but with a positive gearshift, good body control and decent punch in Cooper S guise, it really is as fun as the ads say it is.
