The VW Group always wanted to transform Seat into an Alfa Romeo rival, but that never happened, with the Spanish brand moving back and forth between VW and Skoda.

It’s not that it lacks performance editions of its mainstream products, but that it lacks true sports cars in its range that would help improve its image.

David Cava, a transportation designer from Valencia, Spain, believes one of those models could be an affordable and lightweight roadster in the vein of Mazda’s MX-5 and he sent Carscoops these renderings that he completed at his stay at Seat as an intern in the second half of 2014.

“It’s the result of my research, as to how to fill the gap in the VW group range in this kind of vehicle,” says Cava. “With its sporting appearance, high performance, 2 seater, lightweight, rear wheel drive, this is the perfect competitor against the new Mazda MX-5”.

Cava envisioned the Seat Roadster to be powered by a hybrid unit pairing the Ibiza Cupra’s 1.4-liter TSI four pot tuned to over 200-horses to an electric motor with a combined output of around 240-horses driving the rear wheels. He says the Roadster would tip the scales at under 960 kg (2,116 pounds) equally distributed at both ends offering a power to weight ratio of 4kg per hp.
