It may not look like it judging from the photos of the Superb prototype Skoda released last week, but the Czech automaker says its new flagship model will be a “design revolution.”
To back this claim, Skoda has released a new design sketch that shows the rear end of the car – or a “romanticized” version of it, as the real thing may differ more or less from the drawing. The Superb looks quite sporty from the rear and well-proportioned, thanks to the dynamic-looking taillights and the horizontal lines that give it a well-defined shape.
Skoda describes the new Superb’s design as “sophisticated, elegant, dynamic, discrete, modern and expressive,” and says that the model “revolutionizes the familiar Skoda design language.”
The new Superb features design cues from the VisionC show car, including the sloping roof line, contoured surfaces and sculptural shapes. Although it didn’t reveal any design sketches of the interior, Skoda says the “significant expressive shapes of the exterior” are found in the cabin as well.
Like the new VW Passat, the new Superb will be based on the MQB platform, but will have a longer wheelbase for better rear passenger legroom, while remaining under 5-meters (197 inches) long.
Most turbocharged petrol and diesel engines found in the Passat are expected to be utilized on the new Superb, including VW’s 240 PS 2.0-liter biturbo diesel, paired to manual and dual-clutch DSG transmissions driving either the front or all-four wheels.
The new Skoda Superb will have its world debut in Prague in mid-February 2015, followed by an introduction at the Geneva Auto Show in early March. The market launch is planned for mid-2015.
