Right, so games nowadays need not only be pretty yet functional, mature yet fit for a broad audience, but also do their best to immerse the player.
The margin for error is low, risk of failure high as this is a field where everything you can think of appears to have already been done before. Developers will go to some lengths to ensure their title has character and personality, and this shines through quite brightly in the upcoming (massive scale) online space sim called Space Citizen.
The title is currently in development and will still be in development for some time to come, as it’s really rather ambitious. If you’ve played EVE Online, it’s kind of like that, with the whole freedom thing, economy or working butterfly effect. However, with Star Citizen the desire for more immersion is clear and thus the creators will be adding commercials and tv show excerpts from the year 3000-ish (the GTA series has something similar).
The actual point of this piece was to show the game’s Top Gear spoof thing (which you can check out in the video below), but it needed context. It’s actually not that far from being believable, meaning that some 1,000 years in the future it will obviously discuss space ships and not cars – the style is recognizable and for an in-game invention it’s pretty cool.
If you like it, do also check out the game’s official YouTube channel as it features lots of cool TV ads for ship models – those are characterful (well written) and worth watching too (the second video added as an example). Oh, and the ships are all beautifully modeled and detailed (one of the game’s features) so if you have a fetish for painstakingly created scale models, you’ll like this too.
