After talking to the press and opening up about the possibility of all-wheel drive for the next gen M5 and M6, new BMW M boss Frank van Meel has been giving out hints about new members joining the M family.

While talking about what a sizable power upgrade could mean in the next generation M5 and M6, van Meel told Autocar that he was very fond of the previous 1 Series M Coupe and that he’d “love to do something in that direction again“. If this were to happen, it would translate immediately to the current 2 Series Coupe and it would be called the M2.

Another juicy piece of information he threw out there came when asked about the chances of more BMW SUVs getting a proper M badge. He was quoted as saying “There might be a business opportunity with the X3/X4” – which could indeed signal the birth of the X3 M and the X4 M – that might end up looking similar to this.

But perhaps the most revealing quote van Meel offered the media was when he said that BMW is “looking into all kinds of technologies” and that they can “improve further still with electric turbos“. Apparently he said that while implying that the philosophy has to be right in order to fit in with the M Division, which is code for ‘we can’t act like we’re excited about electric turbos since Audi first came up with that concept in the RS5 TDI‘. Of course he didn’t actually say that, but we can safely assume.
