Nissan will build a new three-cylinder petrol engine at its powertrain plant located at its Resende Industrial Complex in Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil.

The new engine has a 1.0-liter displacement and delivers 76hp and 98Nm (72lb-ft) of torque, both on gas or ethanol. The engine will equip the local version of the Nissan New Versa sedan, which will be manufactured at the Resende Industrial Plant as well, alongside the Nissan New March and the March Active.

Nissan says its new powertrain unit has an aluminum block, 4 valves per cylinder and high-end technological features, promising to deliver “one of the best energy efficiency in Brazil with high performance and low CO2 emissions.” Nissan didn’t say whether the new engine will be exported to other markets as well.

The new 3-cylinder 1.0-liter engine will share the assembly line with the 1.6-liter engine, which has been produced since Nissan started operations at its Resende Industrial Complex in April 2014. Nissan has hired more than 25 professionals to assemble the new engine, increasing the powertrain unit’s team to approximately 200 people. Total investment in the new engine is estimated at R$100 million ($37.2 million).

The Nissan Resende complex produces Nissan’s “Platform V” vehicles and engines and has total capacity to produce 200,000 vehicles and 200,000 engines per year. The facility employs about 1,500 people.
