Jaguar’s entry into the small executive sector of the market, the XE, needs to be really good to even stand a chance against its very talented rivals. The XE could be the first of this generation of Jaguars to actually challenge the opposition, if it’s good, that is.

AutoExpress had a go in a pre-production example at an official launch event. The car they had on hand was the 2.0-liter diesel with 178 hp. The unit itself is not as spritely as the comparable one in the BMW 3-Series, but it does have a deeper sound signature and it matches the German car for economy and on paper performance.

This is not the definitive review of the XE, and for that we’ll have to wait until final-spec cars get delivered to the dealers so that they can be passed on.
