The luxury sedan field might be too crowded, even for Porsche, so the long-rumored Panamera sibling may be going electric-only to make it go directly up against the Tesla Model S.
According to reports from auto motor und sport magazine and Autonews Europe, the car codenamed Pajun – a smaller sedan companion to Porsche’s Panamera – could be marketed exclusively as an EV and axing plans to sell a complete range of gas and diesel models.
It’s rumored Porsche bosses are concerned about the little Porsche sedan being thrown into a market with the ever-popular BMW 5-series and Mercedes E-Class high-performance variants, as well as the new Maserati Ghibli that’s credited with jumpstarting that brand’s sales figures.
Previous reports had the Pajun pushed back as far as 2019 as other projects within the Volkswagen Group were prioritized, ones that weren’t destined to closely rival products from Audi and Bentley, for example.
Porsche is not the first company to be plotting an EV rival to Tesla, but given their heavy push of plug-ins with the Cayenne and Panamera, they may be wisely pushing this path in order to separate their car from the herd.
