We’ve had our eyes on the Golf R Launch Edition ever since VW announced that they would be making 500 versions of their highest performance model.
Also, it only took a $500 reservation fee in order for customers to snag one of these $39,090 Lapiz Blue Metallic 300 PS hot hatchbacks. VW proudly announced that the Golf R Launch Edition reached sold out status in less than 12 hours.
According to Autoblog, VW USA spokesperson Leigh Anne Sessions said that online order books opened at 12:01 AM and the final unit was sold at around 10:30 AM EST. This doesn’t surprise us one bit, seen as though the Golf is one of the most popular cars in the world and everybody loves the GTI version, so how can you not want an even faster R version?
Besides the on board extras, buyers also received special Volkswagen Driver Gear R accessory kit featuring a carbon fiber-stainless steel key chain, a serialized VW R watch and a serialized VIN-specific certificate.
The Golf R Launch Edition (US-spec) has a 2.0 liter TSI engine, delivering 292 HP and 280 lb-ft through a 4MOTION all-wheel drive system, with the help of a 6-speed DSG box. It hits 60 mph in 4.9 seconds (0-62 in 5.1) and tops out electronically at 155 mph (250 km/h).
