A group of men reportedly dressed in South African Police Service (SAPS) uniforms attempted to hijack a vehicle in Pretoria on Thursday, with an eyewitness capturing the scene on film.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Dave Miller confirmed the incident stating that “four or five men” were involved in the botched hijack at the corner of Rubenstein and Helois roads around 8:00 AM this morning, Rekord East reported.

A woman in a nearby car recorded the incident on her cell phone camera with the video showing the hijackers posing as police officers, taking out their guns and forcing the driver of the black BMW X5 into their white BMW 1-Series hatch. At the same time, two other men from the group were trying to get the passenger of the X5 back into the SUV.

However, both victims put up a fight and managed to escape, at which point, the would-be captors decided to call it a day and run off in the 1-Series hatch.

It was reported that shortly after, the police found the BMW hatch abandoned in Tembisa with police issue bulletproof vests, reflector jackets, a blue light and two R5 rifles inside. The men purportedly escaped on foot and remain at large.

No injuries were reported.
