GM has just confirmed production of a new pure-electric model based on the Chevrolet Bolt EV concept car displayed at last month’s Detroit Auto Show.

According to the automaker, the lightweight hatch will offer more than 200 miles (320 kilometers) of driving range and will be available in all 50 states at a target price of around $30,000.

Other details shared by GM is that it will have selectable modes for different driving styles, such as daily commuting, and will be designed to support DC fast charging.

“The message from consumers about the Bolt EV concept was clear and unequivocal: Build it,” said GM North America President Alan Batey. “We are moving quickly because of its potential to completely shake up the status quo for electric vehicles.”

While start of production will be formally announced at a later date, a recent report citing GM supplier sources said that the Bolt will launch late next year.

It will be built at General Motors’ Orion Assembly facility near Detroit, with the factory to receive a $160 million upgrade for tooling and equipment, with the nearby Pontiac Metal Center to get an additional $40 million for new dies.
