If you were looking forward to more powerful engines, wider tires and better looking Formula 1 cars, you may have to wait until at least the 2017 season.
According to Autosport, the suggested plans for a rules revolution have been delayed at least another year after the teams voted against such a restructuring for the 2016 season.
There’s no way to tell how exactly the votes were split but by recent accounts, it may have been Ferrari, Red Bull and maybe (big maybe) McLaren versus the rest of the naysayers. It was known that these three teams brought up the idea of better looking cars for the future, which leads us to think that they were most likely already warmed up to the notion of implementing some changes.
There you have it then. No better sounding 1,000 HP engines, no good looking nose-jobs for the cars, no wider tires (or new tire tender contract) for the time being. In all fairness, doing a massive overhaul could cause certain teams to completely rethink their cars, which if you’re say the current world champions Mercedes AMG Petronas, it’s only naturally that you’d want to give yourself a few more years of assumed dominance.
So then why did the rest of the teams (majority) reject the changes? Especially since they had no reason to stick with their poor performing or under-performing cars. Well, most of the grid is currently powered by Mercedes engines, so if you don’t mind us going all political on you, we’d assume that what they say, goes. For now.
As for McLaren-Honda, even though they allegedly came out with a new car design of their own, they’ve just gotten started on the current car under the current rules. So it’s only natural for them to want to keep working on it instead of going in another direction.
Still, we hope 2017 will bring all these changes to the table, because with faster, better looking cars (like this Ferrari), both the teams and the fans will end up enjoying themselves more.
