Imitation is the highest form of flattery, and Mercedes have already stated that they’re going to follow in Porsche’s footsteps with the AMG GT, making it similar to the 911 in terms of versions and general direction for the future of the model.
Mercedes has indeed been very creative with this latest commercial for the AMG GT. Aggressive advertising techniques do look good and they actually work well in the US (less so in Europe, where the first thing that would cross your mind is that ‘No way is Porsche scared in any way of the Mercedes-AMG GT and the ways it can impact the 911’s image”).
The Porsche 911 is an icon and for all intents and purposes, it was just cruising around when the Merc flew past it in the ad. It wasn’t like it was trying to go fast and got owned. Oh and what’s with the ‘Batman’ music?
Still, let’s hand it to Mercedes-Benz for making a fun ad, centered around the kid’s favorite sports car, the 911, and turning his dream into a nightmare to where he’s suddenly frightened by this new animal in the supercar kingdom. You almost have to wonder why they didn’t go with this one during the Super Bowl (by the way, horrible way to lose for the Seahawks!), instead of that Tortoise vs. Hare nonsense.
Regardless, the Mercedes-AMG GT is without a doubt a beast on the road. It’s a proper 3 second car, which makes it a 911 Turbo rival. But is it better than the 911? Few things on earth are.
