Mitsubishi has given up on launching a new Galant larger midsize sedan, yet it’s still trying to get a replacement to its aging Lancer on the market, even if that means collaborating with rivals Nissan.
Plans to develop the Lancer replacement with Renault reportedly got scrapped and Mitsubishi is now looking at a possible new partner.
Automotive News quotes a company spokesman as having confirmed a new Galant is currently on ice, yet hopes for a new Lancer are not dead. It also reports that said unnamed spokesman did admit cooperating with Nissan to split the costs was “one option,” but was thus inferring that others are on the table too.
Mitsubishi really needs a new more modern sedan, as sales of the Lancer fell 16 percent in 2014. The overall yearly sales figure noted a 25 percent rise, but that was down to demand for much newer models like the Outlander Sport (sold as ASX in Europe).
Strangely, Lancer sales apparently went up 68 percent in January of 2015, when a total of 1,515 units were sold, bucking the previously constant downward trend.
