Nissan has become the first car manufacturer to apply glow-in-the-dark coating which absorbs UV energy during the day and glows for between 8 to 10 hours after sundown.

Naturally the paint was applied to the market leading all-electric LEAF which is now officially crossing the line from Eco to Bio, thanks to its secret formula made up of entirely organic materials. Nissan says that the formula contains a very rare natural earth product called Strontium Aluminate – solid, odorless and chemically and biologically inert. So…it’s not that big of a secret.

If Nissan chooses to make this paint commercially available, it would allegedly last for 25 years – which is a heck of a lot more than the life span of pretty much any modern day car, regardless of how many owners it has over the years.

Also, if you’re one of the UK’s 7,500 Nissan LEAF owners able to save up and buy solar panels for your home, know that you’ll be able not just to decrease your household carbon footprint, but also charge your car for free – as research showed that 89% of LEAF owners charge their cars at home overnight.

Even though solar panels do not store or provide energy when the sun is down, any leftover power from during the day can be fed back into the national grid and homeowners can get a government payment for it, resulting in free energy!

As far as being environmentally friendly, it really doesn’t get any better than this. You’re not just using even less electricity to charge your car (thanks to solar panels – if you’ve got them), but you’re also glowing in the dark so, that’s pretty cool right?

Now let’s just hope the UV energy coating makes it into production.
