You’re probably aware that Volvo is working on a system which would allow, for instance, a delivery person to drop a package and only have one-time access to the boot. Well, now they want to do the same for having to refuel, meaning you won’t have to go fill up as a tanker would actually come to where you are.
It’s basically the same principle as the parcel delivery thing, but given that this is flammable fuel we’re talking about, and thus more prone to incidents, it’s a bit trickier – think of the legal liabilities faced if your Volvo would somehow end up being burnt to the ground by a refueling operator error…
According to the Daily Mail, said operator would receive a one-time-only code to open your fuel flap. You wouldn’t even have to do anything as the service would be automatically designed to send out an alert when fuel is low.
This is a sub-system that would be integrated into Volvo’s idea of self-driving cars. The Swedish automaker is hard at work on autonomous tech, and not having to visit a petrol station would probably make things even more convenient.
Apparently, Volvo has up to this point neither denied nor confirmed the information, reportedly responding with a “maybe” when asked if it was in development.
