We already know that the production EV GM has planned to release in 2017 will look similar to the Bolt concept. We also know that it’s said to be able to travel up to 200 miles / 322 km on a single charge – but what will it be called; “Bolt” seems to be creating confusion and they may or may not be keeping it.
According to The Detroit Free Press, which quotes Alan Batey, the president of GM North America, “Some people think it’s confusing. People are having some fun with it. It is generating awareness, which is good. It’s so conversational.”
He adds that they’re “still in the decision phase,” and that they still have about one year to decide what they’re calling it.
Apparently, the confusion between Volt and Bolt is working in the future model’s favor, even if the two vehicles are different in concept (range extender vs pure EV), because it gets people talking.
As previously mentioned, the model will hit the (US) market in 2017 with no current plans of exporting outside of North America. When the Bolt (or whatever they’ll call it) arrives, the Spark EV will be kept in the range, but there will be no more need for a larger Sonic EV to be created.
