GM said Friday that it expects to deliver the 500,000th fifth-generation Camaro in the US this month. This will be the 5th gen’s final production year, with an all-new 6th generation Camaro to be introduced later in 2015.
“The fifth-generation Camaro has clearly resonated with both long-time Camaro fans, and first time performance-car buyers,” said Todd Christensen, Camaro marketing manager. “That sets the bar high for the next chapter of the car’s history.”
The Camaro Mk5 went on sale in August of 2009 and managed to maintain a constant momentum in the seven years it’s been in production. In 2014, following a facelift, deliveries were up 7.1 percent to 86,279 units, marking the second-best year of sales since its launch.
According to Chevy, even though it’s no secret that there’s a new model coming this year, for the first two months of 2015, total sales are up 3.6 percent over 2014 at 11,364 units.
Of course, GM could not have avoided mentioning the Camaro’s arch-rival from Ford: “Camaro sales passed Mustang in 2010, to become America’s best-selling performance car – a title Camaro has retained for five consecutive years,” said the automaker in a statement.
