The guys are at it again, only this time, watching the base model Corvette Stingray trying to keep up with the 520 HP Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder raises a few questions.
The entry-level Vette has a 6.2 liter V8, putting down 455 HP (460 with performance exhaust) with the help of its rear wheels. The Gallardo Spyder on the other hand, is an all-wheel drive 520 HP beast, especially off the line.
However this drag race takes place on the highway and it’s mostly done from a rolling start, so the Lambo has to rely more on its mid-range punch and maximum power output.
At about 3,298 lbs (1,495 kg) the Vette is also slightly lighter on its feet, which does help its cause. If we pay close attention, the Gallardo does get away from the C7 Stingray but only at very high speeds. As they first accelerate, the Vette does a solid job staying with the Lambo.
Their 0-62 mph (100km/h) times are nearly identical and normally we would have been surprised to see the Vette get the jump on the Gallardo from a stand still, if it wasn’t for the Lambo getting a bad start the first time and then spinning its wheels too much without Launch Control on the second attempt.
These are two very equally matched models and they represent different generations of supercars, so we don’t mind seeing them compete against each other, even though we’d like to discourage highway racing.
