The BBC has announced that it is working on a TV drama based on Gran Theft Auto (developed in Edinburgh, by Rockstar North) as part of a wider initiative to get more people into programming or coding. They call it “Make it digital.”
According to the official statement, the project is “based on Grand Theft Auto, one of the most extraordinary creative and controversial success stories of our time, and a BBC Three talent show, Girls Can Code.”
Engadget found out “the show will be a one-off, feature-length drama running 90 minutes,” and added that it will focus on the stories of what went on behind the scenes. It’s suggested it could be like the movie The Social Network which centered around the story of Mark Zuckerberg and the inception of Facebook.
To us it sounds a bit be like The Office, but on a more serious tone and set in a game studio responsible for one of the biggest and most controversial console and PC series of this generation – it’s got potential.
They’ve not announced when the show is set to come out or just what kind of approach it’s going to have, but we are intrigued and would definitely like to see a dramatization of the inner workings of a major gaming studio.
We also found an old news report (from around the year 2009) that focuses on the Edinburgh-based studio and their most prominent creation.
