The higher the speeds attained in a vehicle, the stronger it needs to be in case something goes wrong. If the vehicle in question is the Bloodhound SSC 1,000 mph land speed record car, then it warrants technology that would be overkill on anything but a fighter jet.

For instance, in the video posted below, they test the strength of its carbon composite cockpit. It comes fitted with two ballistics panels (which are made up of woven glass fiber strands), one on each side.

A big gun/canon is fired at one such panel, in order to simulate a rock hitting it at 1,000 mph. It’s pretty spectacular, as you might imagine, and it goes clean through.

However, on the car, there will be two layers of this plus the added strength of the carbon tub itself.
