BMW’s upcoming 1-Series sedan will be the brand’s second front-wheel drive model after the 2-Series Active Tourer and its larger version, the Gran Tourer.
Aimed at the Mercedes-Benz CLA and Audi A3 sedan, which are also front-wheel drive, the BMW 1-Series sedan is expected to arrive in 2016 at the earliest. It will share the UKL platform with the 2-Series Active Tourer and Gran Tourer, which means it will only be offered with three- and four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines.
The sporty gasoline-powered M125i and the diesel-fueled M125d, both with xDrive four-wheel drive, should top out the range, but the model is also likely to get a performance version from BMW M to take on the Mercedes CLA 45 AMG and Audi S3.
But what about the design? Will it be a smaller version of the 3-Series or will it feature a more daring look? Judging from the spy photos we’ve seen so far, the former approach seems to be more likely. And as RM Design’s renderings show, that isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
