Detroit Electric has opened its first dealership, right next to their production facility in Leamington Spa, UK.

The US electric car maker introduces itself to the public with an impressive first showroom where customers will have the chance to build their own SP:01 electric sports car, using large touchscreen displays to “unique, bespoke specifications”.

“Laying down this showroom marker is an important step as we gear up to the start of production of our first model and prepare to roll it out to our first dealers in Asia and Europe,” said Albert Lam, Chairman and CEO of Detroit Electric.

Detroit Electric will soon begin production of its electric SP:01, which is based on the Lotus Elise and features -for the first time in a modern electric vehicle- a manual gearbox in the Performance model.

The SP:01 Performance is packing 286 electric horses, allowing it to accelerate from zero to 60mph in 3.7 seconds (0-100km/h in 3.9 sec) with a top speed of 155mph (250km/h). Its battery has a capacity of 37 kWh, weighs 1.175kg and its range according to Detroit Electric is up to 178 miles (288km).

The SP:01 will be offered also in a more basic ‘Pure’ model, with 204 hp on tap and a single speed gearbox, giving it a 0-60mph time of 5.3 seconds (0-100km/h in 5.6 sec) and a top speed of 106 mph (170 km/h). Weight is down slightly at 1.155kg and the range remains the same with the Performance model.
