The all-new Lamborghini Huracan LP610-4 has launched exclusively with all-wheel drive, but fans of rear-wheel drive Lambos need not despair. Lamborghini has confirmed that it is developing a lighter, more extreme RWD Huracan that will compete with Ferrari’s new 488 GTB.
The car will basically be a follow-up to the Gallardo Superleggera, which means it will get more power than the standard Huracan, a lighter body and rear-wheel drive. But that’s not all: Lamborghini will also develop a cheaper rear-wheel drive Huracan that could be called the LP610-2.
According to a report from Australia’s Motoring, the information was given by Lamborghini’s chief test driver, Giorgio Sanna, to British car magazine EVO at the launch of the LP620-2 Super Trofeo race car in Malaysia. Sanna also said the successor to the Gallardo Superleggera would follow a similar recipe to Ferrari’s 458 Speciale – implying that the Huracan will shed weight, gain power and focus on track driving.
The Huracan’s predecessor, the Gallardo, was also offered with rear-wheel drive in the “Valentino Balboni” special edition, created as a tribute to the legendary Lamborghini test driver. Later on, the special edition model became a permanent fixture in Lamborghini’s lineup as the LP550-2.
Lamborghini is expected to make an official announcement on the two new rear-wheel drive models in 2016.
