There have been rumors floating around that Mercedes is considering a hardcore version of the GT inspired by their new AMG GT3 racer that’s enjoying its world premiere at this week’s Geneva Motor Show.
Such a version would wear a special moniker going up against the likes of extreme road-cars designed for the track like Porsche’s 911 GT3 models.
If it gets the green light, it would make sense for Mercedes to use the aerodynamic upgrades and styling found on the AMG GT3 on the production car.
What wouldn’t be used, however, is the GT3’s powertrain, which is based on the naturally-aspirated 6.2-liter V8 from the older SLS model, instead of the production GT’s new 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8.
“Low operating costs, long service intervals, the user-friendly technology and, not least, the great reliability of this naturally aspirated, high-revving AMG engine were the reasons for staying with this concept for the customer sports segment,” said Mercedes-AMG in a statement.
Following the test phase, the new AMG GT3 will be delivered to the first customer teams by the end of 2015.
