Mainstream mid-size sedans are taking a beating in most markets around the world due to an insatiable consumer appetite for crossovers as well as for premium-badged cars, but they’re not dead just yet.
Renault had initially pondered about replacing the Laguna with a crossover model, but they retracted and moved ahead with the development of a new sedan model that is expected to arrive within the year, probably making its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show this fall.
Looking beyond the camouflage, we see that the new Laguna (if Renault keeps the name, that is) has a far sportier profile that the current car with a very low front end and a sloping rear windshield that both add dynamism to an otherwise, common body style. It’s not clear from these images if Renault has gone for a regular trunk or a liftback solution.
Renault bosses have said that they aim to create a car with character without being strange, much like their recent Zoe, Captur and Clio.
The new Laguna will offer Renault’s latest range range of petrol and diesel engines, and may even get a plug-in hybrid version. A station wagon model is expected next year.
