After the 2016 Malibu broke cover earlier today, Chevrolet released another statement revealing the car’s city, highway and combined mpg numbers.
If you’re planning on buying the all-new Malibu Hybrid, GM estimates that you’ll be able to enjoy a return of 48 mpg (4.9 l/100km) in the city, 45 mpg (5.2 l/100km) on the highway and a combined 47 mph (5.0 l/100km) – which are great figures for this segment.
In fact, GM president Dan Ammann announced that the Malibu Hybrid’s projected combined mpg are “unsurpassed” by their direct rivals.
“Fuel efficiency is important to our customers, especially in the midsize segment and with an estimated 48 mpg city rating, the Malibu Hybrid delivers,” added Ammann.
At the heart of the all-new Malibu Hybrid sits a new direct-injection 1.8 liter 4 cylinder engine, working together with a slightly modified version of the 2016 Chevrolet Volt’s two-motor drive unit.
The total output comes to 182 HP as the Malibu Hybrid can go up as high as 55 mph (88 km/h) on electricity alone. Afterwards, the gasoline-powered engine comes to life and provides additional power.
Apart from the Volt drive unit, the Malibu Hybrid also borrowed the power electronics and regenerative braking system, providing maximum kinetic energy recovery during breaking, helping the battery system maintain its charge.
Manufacturing-wise, the Malibu Hybrid will be build in Kansas City, Kansas at the Fairfax Assembly plant and is due to hit Chevy dealers across the U.S in spring 2016.
