We dare Hyundai to actually build this thing as is, despite the fact that if we had to bet, we’d bet against it. But that doesn’t mean people wouldn’t flock to buy one.
The Santa Cruz Crossover Truck Concept showed up in Detroit a few months back as a design study directed at Millennials. Why them? Well because they represent the second-largest population of car buyers and because whether we realize it or not, these types of designs are indeed the future.
Looking at it rationally, a multi-purpose utility vehicle makes a great deal of sense for people who are already used to pick-up trucks in general, but also SUVs and crossovers in general. Also, one word: Australia.
Down under, this thing would sell like the latest iPhone and we’re not even kidding. Aussies love cars like the Uti and this would simply be a bigger, less dynamic but more capable and more comfortable version of what Holden is doing.
Of course we’re talking about two different types of cars, but the idea is the same. In the future we’re bound to want to mix things together and have not just the best of both worlds but all worlds. The looks, the gadgets, the comfort, the utility and so on.
Markets such as Australia, the U.S and even South Africa would be ideal for any type of ultra-modern/futuristic-looking pick-up, full of tech and probably even a hybrid or full electric powertrain – even though we’re probably going way too far into the future right now.
The Santa Cruz however is powered by a 2.0 liter turbodiesel unit, good for 190 HP and 406 Nm (300 lb-ft) of peak torque which would definitely be insufficient in regards to what U.S and Australian customers would expect from their pick-up.
Still, we’re glad they brought it to New York as well, since it’s a great looking concept and we seriously hope it gets the green light sooner or later.
