Whenever there’s an all-new model making its way to the drag strip (or even those silly highway drag races), we get really excited to see what it can do.
We’ve got the new Mercedes-AMG GT S, which is the range-topping version sitting pretty at 510 PS (503 HP), able to get from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 3.8 seconds. And then we’ve got the 3.8 liter flat six Porsche 911 Carrera 4 GTS, packing 430 PS and needing 4.0 seconds in order to reach 100 km/h.
On paper, they’re fairly similar as far as acceleration times are concerned. However, what we’re concerned of is the difference in power (not to mention torque). It’s big enough to eradicate any weight advantage the 911 might have – and it’s a small one at just 80kg.
Off the line, the Porsche takes the lead thanks to its low weight and all-wheel drive system, before the Merc‘s 650 Nm of torque kick in and have their say.
While the end-result isn’t surprising, the way in which one of the cars was pulling ahead (guess which one) felt a bit unexpected.
Still, a very interesting race as we look forward to seeing the AMG GT S go up against more powerful, or at least equally powerful opponents.
