Well this is awkward; haven’t we learned everything from Matthew McConaughey’s Lincoln ads? Here’s something else for us to poke fun at.
Except that we won’t, will we? This is Kevin Spacey we’re talking about here, and Renault knows that. People don’t make fun of Kevin Spacey. He is one of the world’s greatest actors, while McConaughey (as good as he was in True Detective) is just one of the most popular, albeit highly skilled as well.
Spacey won a Golden Globe for his work on Netflix’ House of Cards, where he plays Frank Underwood and does so magnificently. He’s also starred in the Unusual Suspects, one of the best movies ever made, and really excelled in American Beauty.
In this Renault spot, he talks about these three roles indirectly while driving his Espace, telling us basically that he’s enjoying his time at the wheel and that it’s why he “just drives.”
What’s interesting is that Spacey is using a little bit of his made-up southern accent for the ad, just like he does when playing Frank Underwood in House of Cards – and we could listen to ‘President Underwood’ talk all day long.
As for the Espace, it’s Renault’s best-looking MPV yet, though we expect it to have a tough time fighting against the new Ford S-Max.
