Some were convinced it was an April Fool’s joke when we first learned of a brand-new Subaru BRZ STI on Tuesday, but today, we know that it isn’t a prank: behold the latest BRZ STI… Concept.
According to Subaru, the latest STI Performance Concept represents the expansion of STI (Subaru Tecnica International) in the U.S. market. In particular, Subaru hopes to promote three core business areas here: aftermarket parts, STI-tuned production vehicles, and motorsports
“At STI we know from our racing that to win, it is important not only to have high power, but also that all aspects of performance are balanced over the whole car,” said Yoshio Hirakawa, president of Subaru Tecnica International, Inc. “When we achieve this balance, the driver feels that the car is easy to handle and reliable, and he can use it fully to the limits of its performance. Our plan is to produce cars and accessories that drivers can really enjoy.”
While the BRZ STI Performance Concept is merely a design study, the new Subaru features a BRZ race engine developed for Super GT, significant suspension and chassis upgrades, as well as extensive aero upgrades. Notable exterior design details include a new set of BBS wheels, a restylized front bumper featuring massive ducts feeding the radiator, a vent just behind the front wheels, a side splitter that features winglets just ahead of the rear wheels, a large GT spoiler on the trunk, and finally a functional rear diffuser.
