The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has just awarded the revised 2016 Audi A6 its highest Top Safety Pick+ honors. The car’s performance was rated as “stellar,” especially thanks to its better handling of the small overlap crash test.

The car was reportedly updated in order to address its performance in this very test. The Institute reports that “the driver’s space was maintained well, with maximum intrusion of 4 inches at the foot rest. The dummy’s movement was well-controlled… Measures taken from the dummy indicate a low risk of any significant injuries in a crash of this severity.”

One area where the A6 wasn’t exactly “stellar” was in its front crash prevention/mitigation tech. It was fine at lower speeds, slowing the vehicle down by 10 mph on average, but in higher velocity tests, the average speed scrubbed before impact was only 1 mph.

It was “not enough to earn credit. The system does get credit in the Institute’s ratings for a warning component that meets the government’s criteria for forward collision warning.”
