The AMC AMX is hardly ever mentioned in the company of the Ford Mustang and Chevy Corvette of the late 1960s. This is fine by those who have an appreciation for the car because it keeps prices fairly low and makes them excellent left-field projects to work on.
Parts aren’t as easy to come by as they are for the Mustang or Vette, but with 19,134 cars built over three years (1968-1970), you can still source them.
Its owners appreciate it for being unique, quite sporty looking with its flared wheelarches and long hood, good to drive and fairly easily customizable. All models, even the base 290 get a move on, although for the enthusiast, what you really want is the 390 four-speed.
Drive featured a slightly modified example that just looks like a lot of fun to drive. This particular one is unique in that the owner went for skinny tires up front and 315-section tires at the rear – this bestows the car with a kind of drag-esque look.
