Will there be a hardcore performance variant above the Cadillac “V” moniker? According to Cadillac ATS-V chief engineer David Leone during a media launch event in Texas, the answer is yes. Namely, Cadillac may deliver an ultimate Cadillac ATS-V variant that will take on the Mercedes-Benz AMG Black Series.
“We might have something down the road that is a little bit more aggressive,” said David Leone, according to Car&Driver. The standard Cadillac ATS-V produces 464 hp, while the big brother CTS-V boasts 640 hp. The convenient power gap gives Cadillac just enough freedom to offer a meaner ATS-V with as much as 550 hp.
As Mercedes AMG moves towards dual-clutch transmission and all-wheel-drive, Cadillac also mulled on the possibility of incorporating a similar package for the ultra ATS-V as well. However, Leone and the team ultimately decided to abandon the idea.
The dual-clutch gearbox came close to reality as Cadillac considered the possibility of sourcing a transmission or perhaps to develop a new transmission internally. In the end, Leone determined that a dual-clutch gearbox ” would have been significantly heavier and more expensive, with no faster response time.”
As for the possibility of all-wheel-drive, Cadillac said that the drivetrain would add an extra 190 to 200 lbs. to the front wheels. Despite the traction benefits of all-wheel-drive, Leone determined that the extra hardware will add understeer and take away the sharp handling feel the standard ATS-V offers.
Finally, Cadillac will reportedly offer more “V” models across its lineup. As far as we can tell, the most obvious future addition to the V family will be the upcoming Cadillac CT6 luxury sedan.
“There will be eight new entries in five new segments over the next few years, and we can see a V-series in one or two of those,” said Cadillac global marketing director Jim Vurpillat.
