VW has started production of the all-new Touran MPV at its main plant in Wolfsburg, Germany.

The first new production VW Touran was an Oryx White vehicle in the Highline equipment level, fitted with the 1.4-liter TSI BlueMotion Technology petrol engine producing 150 PS (148hp).

The compact MPV has been completely redesigned and now offers a more spacious interior, new engines that are up to 19 percent more fuel efficient and new assistance systems.

The new model offers 47 different storage compartments and a boot volume of 743 liters (26.2 cu-ft) in five-seater configuration, but can optionally be equipped with two extra seats. All Touran models get a newly developed fold-flat seat system, including a lighter set of second row seats that can be folded down to merge flat with the luggage floor.

Based on the MQB platform just like the Golf Mk7 and Golf SportsVan which are also built in Wolfsburg, the new VW Touran is 62kg (137lbs) lighter that the outgoing model.

This helps it deliver up to 19 percent better fuel economy than the outgoing model. For now, the VW Touran can be ordered with two turbocharged petrol (TSI) engines delivering 110PS (108hp) and 150PS (148hp), as well as two diesels (TDI) rated at 110PS (108hp) and 150PS (148hp). Later on, an 180PS (178hp) TSI and 190PS (187hp) TDI will follow.

Germany’s most successful family van is already on sale in its home country, with prices starting from €23,350 ($25,545). Deliveries in European countries begin in September.
