After five seasons with Ferrari, Fernando Alonso has returned to McLaren, trying to make the best of an impossible situation. But just how much should he worry when it comes to his career?
According to his former teammate Jarno Trulli, Alonso should face the fact that he might never win another race or championship at this rate.
Fernando signed a 3 year deal with McLaren-Honda, and even though it’s clear the team isn’t winning anything in 2015, it’s unlikely they’ll jump to the top of the pecking order on the grid next year.
Even if they end up being competitive in his final year at McLaren, it might just be too late as Trulli points outs.
“McLaren won’t get on top of the problems quickly and won’t easily catch up with the teams in front next year,” stated the Italian driver.
Trulli and Alonso were teammates in 2003 and 2004, when they were driving for Renault. Spending this much time with the Spaniard, helped Trulli better understand what makes him tick.
“I had a very good relationship with Fernando at Renault. Firstly, you are dealing with a good driver – he knows he can win and wants to win – and secondly, he’s the kind of character that wants to be in charge. That might be good for the team because you need a driver with a personality.”
Jarno followed that by saying “Sometimes Fernando is tough to deal with. This is the tough time and tough side of the deal. Both driver and team should find a compromise and improve the team situation.” It’s obvious that this might be the hardest thing Alonso has ever had to do in his F1 career.
None of the other teams will be standing idle as McLaren tries to improve their car. While we might see them score a few points this year, we’ll probably have to wait until at least next year (more realistically 2017) in order to see them actually win a race.
