Porsche has reportedly trademarked the “GT5” name, but it’s odd because it doesn’t designate any FIA racing class, so we can’t even speculate as to what sort of models it will be used for.
According to Autocar, Porsche refused to make any official comments on whether or not it will be used in the future or what models it will be used on.
The source suggests it could be connected to a statement by Andreas Preuninger, GT division boss, whom, when asked “whether the increasing sales of Porsche’s SUVs would be followed by more motorsports-developed cars in order to maintain the brand’s sporting spirit,” replied “Absolutely my suggestion.”
So it could be used to badge a new line of more traditional but very high performance Porsche models, or it may very well be a sign of “covering any bases” as a company spokesperson reportedly stated.
The German trademark was filed in August of 2014 and granted two months later, along with GT4, and it’s currently under examination at the European office.
