With temperatures topping 104 degrees Fahrenheit (40 Celsius) and nearing 122 F (50 C) in some areas, the situation in India is dire with the horrible heat wave having claimed over 1,300 lives.
It’s so bad that the extreme temperatures on the surface of the roads are causing the asphalt to melt, as you can see in the video and pictures of the disfigured white stripes of a pedestrian crossing.
India’s officials hope that the annual rains will make their appearance soon and bring some relief to millions of people.
“The rains which have eluded us for the last couple of years have created serious drought conditions,” said state minister K.T. Rama Rao in Telangana. “This is unprecedented…so there is a little bit of panic. Hopefully the monsoon will be on time. Hopefully we will receive rain very, very soon.”
