After the laser-powered headlights battle between BMW and Audi settled down, a new trend seems to catching on: Eye-tracking technology.
This promises to be a cool piece of future tech that can be used on a variety of applications. Back in March, Opel announced an eye tracking headlight system in which the driver’s eye precisely directs the beam coming out of the headlights.
Now, Jaguar apparently patented a system that lets you control the rear windscreen wipers with your eyes.
It works on the basis that on wet roads or while raining, constant wiping is unnecessary and intermittent-wiping is mistimed with the driver’s glances in the rearview mirror. So, to avoid such discrepancies, the system monitors your head and eye movements, triggering the rear windscreen wiper as soon as you throw a look in the mirror.
It’s about time somebody addressed this issue. Seeing the rear wiper doing is job in the mirror was becoming a nuisance…
For this to work properly, the wipers should be turned on and working intermittently. That means regardless if you’re looking, the wipers are working, but not as frequently as the ones on the windshield. Serious stuff here people. And no, they won’t double wipe when caught red-handed. The system is much too smart to do that.
