Mazda announced that cumulative production of the CX-5 SUV has exceeded one million units at the end of April 2015, only three years and five months since production started in November 2011.

This is a pretty important milestone for Mazda, as the CX-5 is the brand’s second fastest model to reach the milestone one-million-unit mark, following the Mazda3 (known as Mazda Axela in Japan).

The Mazda CX-5 was the first of the company’s new-generation models featuring Skyactiv Technology and the KODO-Soul of Motion design language.

Production began initially at Ujina Plant in Hiroshima, but has since been expanded to include China (Changan Mazda Automobile Co), Russia (Mazda Sollers Manufacturing Rus), Malaysia (Mazda Malaysia Sdn) and Vietnam (Vina Mazda Automobile Manufacturing).

The Mazda CX-5 arrived on the global crossover SUV market in February 2012 as a new core model for the brand and has since won more than 60 different awards around the world, including the Car of the Year in Japan in 2012-2013. The CX-5 has become a key model in Mazda’s global car lineup and was the top-selling SUV in Japan in 2012 and 2013.

“I am delighted to see the CX-5 reach the one-million-unit mark in only three years and five months. I would like to express my gratitude to the people all over the world who have appreciated and supported the CX-5. We are committed to continue enhancing this model into the future to ensure that it remains a popular choice among people with active lifestyles, and will appeal to even more customers in the future,” said Masashi Otsuka, Program Manager of the CX-5.
