Forget about the popular ‘downsizing’ term, Audi now calls it ‘rightsizing’ instead with the first details of its new 2.0-litre TFSI revealed.

The new engine implements an innovative combustion method, based on the Miller-cycle to further lower its fuel consumption with Audi promising less than 5l/100km (47.0 US mpg – 56 UK mpg) in the NEDC cycle.

The new four-cylinder 1,984cc turbocharged direct-injected engine is rated at 190hp and 320Nm (236 lb-ft) of torque spread between 1,450 and 4,400rpm and will make its first appearance under the bonnet of the all-new A4.

Audi engineers have “further developed” the Miller-cycle, with the intake time significantly shortened, higher boost pressure on the inlet side and an earlier closure of the intake valve among others.

“Thanks to this rightsizing approach, the new engine enjoys the consumption benefits of a downsizing engine in partial load operation, while at higher loads it has the advantages of a large-displacement engine. The result is optimal efficiency and performance characteristics across the entire engine speed range”, said Dr. Stefan Knirsch, Head of Engine Development at Audi.

The new engine tips the scales at only 140kg which is light for a turbocharged motor, and uses low-friction oil (0W-20) to further increase its efficiency.
