Before full autonomous driving spreads around the world, we will have to go through incremental stages, and Porsche is well on its way to creating one of these intermediary systems.
The maker of the 911 is currently testing prototypes whose cruise control can not only maintain a set speed, itself in between the markings and an appropriate distance to the car in front, but it can also go around corners… quite briskly, actually.
Apparently, the system, called InnoDrive, can navigate the car by itself around corners where the lateral force does not exceed .7g. This can be set and altered from a menu in the car, although weirdly, it still requires the driver to steer.
So picture this: you have this new cruise control set to sixty mph and you approach a corner with it engaged. It will calculate the safe speed to take the corner at, and you can just steer through it, feet clean off the pedals.
Porsche says this system improves engine efficiency and lowers travel times slightly. We need to learn more about this system before expressing further opinions, though.
