Rally drivers are notorious for doing everything in their power to win. Or, at least, finish the race…

Rally is a motorsport discipline filled with racing drivers that usually do everything humanly possible to cross the finish line. In Formula 1, for example, if you lose a wheel, you’re out of the race. In rally, things are a little bit different.

If you lose a wheel here, you keep going as fast as you can, trying your best to preserve the car. There are countless examples in which the driver has lost an actual wheel – during an accident – and continued racing the car until it fell apart. Collin McRae did it, Mikko Hirvonen did it, Tommi Makinen did it, Sebastian Loeb did it – it’s like a rite of passage in rallying and it’s considered completely normal.

But what happens when you lose the actual steering wheel of the car? Well, first of all, you keep your calm. Second, you thank God it didn’t happen at high speed. Third, you use your hand to control the steering hub and be on your way. Just like this guy did it:
