New spyshots captured Opel engineers testing what is believed to be a warmer version of the next Astra, as evidenced by the twin tailpipes at the back and according to our spies, a throatier engine sound.
The tester may lead to a revival of the Astra GSi moniker with this edition placed right under the range-topping Astra OPC or Astra VXR when flaunting Vauxhall badges.
Whereas the Astra OPC with around 300hp would be tuned to take on the VW Golf R, Honda Civic Type R and Ford Focus RS, the Astra GSi would focus on the likes of the VW Golf GTI and Ford Focus ST.
Information on the powertrain(s) remains limited at this time, but the GSi could offer both petrol and diesel engines, much like the Focus ST, with 220hp or more and around 180hp respectively.
The regular versions of the new Astra will be revealed this June, with the sportier editions to follow within the next 12 months.
