You may have heard about an older study which stated that men behind the wheel are more likely to crash into moving objects, whereas women are more prone to hitting stationary ones?
Well, here’s another one, this time saying you’re twice as likely to die in a car if you’re a dude.
It was completed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration which collected data involving fatalities, injuries or property damages. According to Vox, which quotes the original NHTSA study, “every year since data collection began, a given male driver was much more likely to get into all three.”
This is partly explained by the fact that men on average do around 50 percent more miles than a women yearly, but even so, their accident rates are still higher. The only category in which women are more prone to fall into is the frequent fender bender category, but nothing any more serious than that.
Apparently, the main reason for this is the propensity for men to get behind the wheel inebriated; far fewer women do this and it’s apparently a deciding factor in the study’s results.
Interestingly, while men may be twice as likely to die in a car crash, the rate of less severe accidents is far more balanced between the two genders. Makes you understand why insurance companies give women more favorable rates than they do for men…
