One of the sure things about the sixth-gen 2016 Camaro’s future is that it will soon gain a second body style in the form of a Convertible, but could or should GM explore more options?
That’s a question as old as the original Ford Mustang, if we’re talking about pony cars, or as old the automobile itself, generally speaking.
Personally, I find no reason why there shouldn’t be another two-door (not counting the rear hatch) version of the new Camaro in the guise of a way more practical and unique-looking, Shooting Brake edition from the moment they offer a Convertible, which will probably come with a weight penalty and reduced rigidity over its coupe sibling.
It’s not like GM will be diluting the Camaro’s brand name or performance traits with a two-door sports wagon. Heck, have one of the Italian studios handle the design and give it a different flair from the rest of the range.
Another option is a heavier and longer four-door coupe, but it could be seen by some as thinning the Camaro’s sports label. On the other hand, we’ve seen the Germans pull it off with cars like the BMW 4-Series Gran Turismo, and GM could also address the issue of the Chevy SS’ derivative looks in the RWD sports sedan segment.
